Hawking is the director of research in the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge. He did much of his seminal research on black holes during a yearlong visit to Caltech in 1974–75. Since 1992, Caltech has been Hawking's home away from home; he spends about a month each year there, carrying out research and exchanging ideas with Caltech faculty, postdoctoral scholars and graduate students.
