Regional Atmosphere, Ocean and Aerosol Data Assimilative Modeling and its Applications

<B>Abstract</B>

Over the last decade, a group of JPL and UCLA researchers have been undertaking the development of regional atmosphere, ocean, and aerosol assimilative modeling systems. In this talk, capability of these systems is reviewed and results from a variety of applications are presented. The systems include: l) A multi-scale Grids Statistical Interpolation (MS-GSI) data assimilation scheme for the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model; 2) A multi-scale three-dimensional variational data assimilation (MS-3DVAR) system for the Regional Ocean Model System (ROMS) and 3) An aerosol MS-3DVAR data assimilation system for the WRF/ Chem model. The multidata assimilation scheme is formulated particularly for its applications to atmospheric cloud resolving and oceanic eddy resolving models, and for the assimilation of high-resolution remote sensing measurements.

<B>Dr. Zhijin Li</B>, a research technologist, is an expert in the mathematical formulation and practical implementation of advanced data assimilation algorithms for regional atmosphere and ocean models. He has developed a hierarchy of observational data merging algorithms, which have been used to merge multi-satellite and in-situ sea surface temperatures, blend QuickSCAT and model winds, and map high-frequency radar velocities. His major work is in the development of comprehensive, innovative and advanced data assimilation system for coastal oceans. These systems are currently used operationally for real-time coastal ocean data assimilation and prediction. Recently, he has led developed a comprehensive aerosol data assimilation system. Dr. Li has published more than thirty journal papers.
