Overview Ongoing Research Projects

The JPL Machine Shop provides the Lab with in-house machining support. The R&D Machine Shop has a wide range of machining capabilities, and specializes in R&D/prototype and precision machining. These specialties include multi-axis Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) programming/machining, wire/sinker Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM), close tolerance & micro machining, large-scale machining, finish machining, and precision jig boring.

Machine Shop personnel will provide value to a quality product, using their expertise in the following functional areas Group provides value in the following functional areas:

  • EDM Machining (Sinker and Wire)
  • Precision Jig Boring
  • Precision Grinding
  • Precision Model Fabrication
  • General Machining
  • Satellite Machining Services (Including Facilities For Customer Use)

  • Design and Engineering Support for Manufacturing
  • Planning and Control (Estimating/Manufacturing Scheduling)


Various components of the Mars Science Laboratory rover were designed and fabricated at the Machine Shop, including cradle fixtures, vertical swingarms, and wheels.

The JPL Machine Shop was involved in created a substrate mirror for the OCO and OCO-2 spacecrafts along with other integral components.

Corrugated horns were designed to specific specifications for Juno's microwave antennas.
