The Galaxy Evolution Explorer: Six years and 25000 square degrees of Ultraviolet science from sealed tube microchannel plate detectors

Abstract:

GALEX was proposed as a 28 month "off the shelf" mission to survey the sky in the Ultraviolet (135 to 300 nm). Six years and 25000 square degrees later GALEX is providing the scientific community with an unprecedented database of astrophysical phenomena that has become the standard reference of space ultraviolet measurements. This talk will present some of the highlights of what can be done with a small explorer class mission.
