Modern Detector Ideas for the Next Generation of UV Astronomy Missions

Abstract:
This will be a two-part seminar on detector advancements aimed at the next generation of ultraviolet astronomy missions. In the first half, Morrissey will give an overview of currently available technologies and their performance. A summary of results from the NASA Galaxy Evolution Explorer mission will be shown. Ideas for a new detector design will be presented that combine recently available commercial readout technology from e2v with an ultraviolet “delta doping” surface treatment invented at JPL into a photon-counting, solid-state detector with an order-of-magnitude improvement in performance. In the second half, Hoenk will present work in progress at JPL to implement the new detector design, along with some very recent results.
