Storms happen in the atmosphere but affect the ocean in many ways, churning up anoxic water, misdirecting migrating organisms, tumbling the plankton community, and inundating the coast with storm surges. How long do these influences have an impact?

Dr. Gierach is a scientist in the Oceans and Ice Group at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Her research interests include ocean-atmosphere interactions, ocean dynamics, atmospheric processes, and the ocean's relation to climate variability utilizing satellite data, field observations, and models. She received her Ph.D. in marine science from the University of South Carolina in 2009.
